Professor Jon Patrick co-founded HLA in 2012 and has grown the business into one of the world’s leading consulting and SAS solutions for clinical environments.

His diverse background in the computer science disciplines of computational linguistics, information systems, machine learning and software engineering have enabled him to lead HLA’s young team of highly educated professionals to develop enviable internationally leading edge technologies.

Jon has held many academic positions in his career, most recently the Chair of Information Systems at Sydney University from 1998-2002, and then transferred to the Chair of Language Technology from 2002-2012. In 2012, he left the University to develop his research ideas in an industrial mould; although he still holds an Honorary appointment at Sydney. In 2005, he won Australia’s national Eureka Science Prize for his Scamseek project, a system built for the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) to identify financial scams on the Internet, thus establishing himself as a world leader in language engineering. Since 2005, he has applied his expertise to language used in clinical documentation and demonstrated many innovations in advanced processing of clinical document. In 2010, his team won the international i2b2 Challenge for clinical language processing and has ranked amongst the top teams ever since.
